Thursdays with NAMI: Marine veteran’s recovery inspired his poetry and service to others

Thursday, March 30, 7:00pm

Jacksonville resident Eric Sowers is a veteran of the Marine Corps and the son of a Marine veteran.

After 15 years of service that included combat missions, he and his family moved back to North Carolina. Though Eric had left Iraq and Afghanistan behind, his mind brought the war back to life as he struggled to be a father and husband. Through flames of rage, shame, and addiction, Eric persevered to discover moments of joy and a path to inner peace. His journey inspired him to write a book called The Child That Would Be Missed. It includes poems that can help people connect to their pain and get better at getting better.

Eric’s desperate experiences while seeking help also motivated him to create CASEVAC, a program that rapidly connects veterans with resources.

“I want to drive home to people they’re not alone and if they need help there’s help,” he said. “They can get better.”
