NAMI Wilmington Chapter
Public Board Meeting
Present: Doug Engelman, Bob Taglin, Virginia Goldrick, Dennis Doll, Ben Holt, Sheryl Sparks,
Kimberly Light, Ellen Galant, Laura Hatvany, Anna Petro and Jennifer Zufran.
Via Zoom: Chuck Eldridge, Janis Eldridge, Alabama Stone, Kay Sargent and Michelle
Hettmann.

The Board meeting for the NAMI Wilmington Chapter was called to order by Doug
Engelman, President at 7:00 pm. A quorum was established with six board members
present.

Old Business:
A motion was made by Virginia Goldrick and seconded by Bob Taglin to approve the minutes
from the May 16, 2023 NAMI Wilmington Public Board Meeting. This motion was unanimously
approved.

New Business:
Walk Update- Janis Eldridge reported that to date we have over $15,000 committed from our
Walk sponsors.The Walk will be taking place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Long Leaf
Park in Wilmington. Registration is now available on our website at namiwilmington.org.

Support Programs Update- Chuck Eldridge reported that Family Support, Family to Family, Peer
Support, Youngish, Senior Talks, Ocean House and Novant Behavioral Center all continue with
normal attendance. The Behavioral Center had 22 attendees last month. Currently we have 28
active trained facilatators.

Provider Expansion- Chuck Eldridge, Kim Palmer and Carolyn Craddock have committed to the
Provider Expansion training program. We are currently seeking a Provider Awareness
Coordinator as well as backup volunteers..

Community Outreach Update- Chuck reported that Domestic Violence and Ocean House are
currently having regular support meetings. Virginia Goldrick and Matt DeLuca have volunteered
to lead a newly formed support group at The Healing Place of New Hanover County starting
September 6, 2023..

Ending the Silence- Dennis Doll briefly discussed the purpose and intention of what the six
trained presenters hope to accomplish. This program is targeted primarily for middle schools,
high schools and colleges. Presentations are given by facilitators and peers discussing their
testimony of personal struggles and how they dealt with them. Dennis is looking to roll out the
program to the New Hanover County school board and parent advisory council.

Communications Update- Michelle Hettman introduced herself as our newly hired
Communications Consultant. She has been working with our Communication Coordinator,Kay
Sargent helping to build templates, embellishing social media content for facebook and
instagram and setting up new gmail accounts. She has also researched options for our website,
specifically NAMI EasySite.

President’s Report- Doug Engelman reported on NAMI on Campus, and the excitement of
having an active campus group led by Laura Hatvany as President. We are looking forward to
their partnership with needed community volunteer work and internships. Doug ended the
meeting with a review of the current status of NAMI NC board leadership.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.

The next NAMI Wilmington Public Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 19,
2023 at 7:00pm at UNCW Bear Hall Room 101.
