Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise” was an inspiration to us in establishing our Conference theme this challenging year. While written about the eternal fight of women and slavery, it really reads as a signature piece to encourage all who may struggle with obstacles and are determined not to give up. “You may write me down in history/ With your bitter, twisted lies/ You may tread me in the very direct/ But still, like dust, I’ll rise.”

And Still I Rise is a hopeful theme that will encapsulate all who may face injustice. In particular, challenges associated with mental illness, and the determination to not give up, and finding a way to thrive – regardless of society’s stigmas and current shortcomings.

NAMI NC’s 18th Annual Conference, which will be virtual this year, is scheduled for October 10, 2020 and will be offered at no charge to participants.
