The City of Durham has just rolled out a new pilot program for responding to citizens who call while in a mental health crisis.

The program has three parts: the 9-1-1 call center will be staffed by mental health professionals who can speak with the person in crisis, unarmed 3-person response teams will dispatched to help the person, freeing up law enforcement for other types of calls, and finally, care navigators will follow up to help the person find the care they need.
