NAMI North Carolina frequently speaks of the scarcity of mental health professionals in our state, especially therapists from underrepresented communities. 1 in 5 adults has a mental health condition in our state, and there are simply not enough professionals to treat them.

But there is another basic need in our state that makes mental health recovery difficult. Namely, there is a dire need for mental health beds in facilities around the state. While some hospital systems have committed to making more beds available, some are wondering if enough effort is being made to help mental health patients stranded in emergency rooms, sometimes for days.
