Thursdays with NAMI: Stigma and discrimination in the workplace

Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022

Most of us who live with mental health conditions want a career, just like everyone else. But it’s complicated. There’s the constant worry that work stress will make our symptoms worse. The question of whether to share a diagnosis. And wondering how authentic we can be with coworkers. It’s exhausting.

How do we navigate these issues – emotionally, socially, and legally? Join us to get real answers from a mental health advocate and an attorney.

Danei Edelen is President of NAMI Brown County, Ohio. She had a successful marketing career prior to having a psychotic break a number of years ago. After her first hospitalization she asked her employer for a reasonable accommodation and was promptly fired. Then she sued them and got a settlement. Today she is a blogger for Challenge the Storm, The Mighty, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and NAMI Ohio. In 2020, Danei won the Ohio News Media Hooper Award for her original column on mental health. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Malone University and a Market Research Certificate from Northern Kentucky University.

Chris Hodgson joined Disability Rights NC as a staff attorney in 2015 after graduating from UNC School of Law. In 2020, Hodgson was promoted to Target Leader on the Community Inclusion Team. Chris developed a passion for disability rights prior to law school when he worked as a direct care aide, case manager, and day program coordinator.
