When Doug Kaufman left TransLoc, the Durham-based transportation technology startup he sold to Ford Motor Co., he thought he would take an extended break from the business world.

Around the time he left TransLoc in 2019, Kaufman and his wife noticed a change in his teenage daughter’s behavior. Thinking it was just typical teenage moodiness, he decided it was best to give her some space.

But that moodiness was actually a sign of a more severe mental health crisis for his daughter. Kaufman, who declined to share specific details, was shocked by the episode.
