Thursdays with NAMI – 7 p.m. September 23, 2021

Christy Banks knows what it’s like to worry endlessly about a parent. During her childhood her father’s mental illness cast a long shadow over the family. As an adult she saw schizophrenia for what it was – a disease – and only wanted to keep him safe.

At St. Mark AME Church in Rocky Mount, she found a big supporter in her pastor, the Rev. Robert Yarbrough. They came together to find ways to support family members and anyone else whose lives had been invaded by mental illness. In addition, St. Mark’s Manna Ministry offers meals to anyone in need. Christy developed Building Bridges of Hope Outreach Ministries to spread the word further and lift people up.
