Sharif Brown was new in his role of Program Manager for State Reentry at the Alliance of Disability Advocates in 2019. Adrian Boone was in his 18th year of a 20-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner. This is a story of hard work and second chances.
Adrian came from a good family that got caught up with addiction. He started working as a teen to support them financially, first at a local mall. When he noticed who had money in his neighborhood, he asked the drug dealers for a job. Starting as a lookout, he became more and more involved in the business and the fights that came about over who controlled what territory; he knew he was growing away from the values he was raised with. During one encounter he was shot. After a shooting in which another drug dealer was killed, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. While incarcerated Adrian took every learning opportunity available and received zero infractions. When he met Sharif Brown and joined a re-entry program, he was able to find recovery and a fresh start. Today his is the Director of Operations at Solutions For Independence in Winston-Salem.
