There are few jobs that are as consistently stressful as those of law enforcement officers and other first responders. Besides the intrinsic dangers of their jobs, first responders have had to deal with social unrest and a pandemic, often in a way different than their neighbors.

These things take a significant emotional toll on the lives of these heroes who protect us, a fact that is borne out by suicide statistics. A Ruderman Family study has found that more police officers and firefighters die by suicide than in the line of duty. Mental health experts are realizing that stress and unique stigmas are creating an unsustainable situation for first responders. Something needs to be done.
