NAMII NC would like to congratulate member John Widener for being awarded the 2021 Governor’s Medallion Service Award. This prestigious honor is given each year to a very limited amount of people in the state of North Carolina. John has been a standout for his volunteer work with veterans in Burke County, but he is also heavily involved in his local church, helps to deliver meals to housebound individuals, and is a committed NAMI volunteer.

With NAMI, he is active Board member of the NAMI South Mountains affiliate. John is also a NAMI Program Leader in multiple programs–facilitating Connection Support Groups and is certified as a teacher of both Family to Family and Peer to Peer classes. He also does In Our Own Voice presentations, telling his personal journey to help reduce stigma and share hope to others. John will also be one of the panelists for a May 17th webinar about mental health resources for ourselves and our loved ones. (see Events section below for information)

Congratulations, John – we are so proud and thankful to have you as part of our community!
