Thursdays with NAMI:

Ashish George Wants to Talk about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

7 p.m. Aug. 18, 2022

We hear a lot about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). So what do the words really mean, and how do they relate to mental health?

DEI has to do with how people are treated based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc. Diversity looks at the reflection of the outside world in the composition of a group; if you are in a club or group, does that group look like America?

People may draw strength and support from their groups, especially family and community. On the other hand, being subject to racism, discrimination, or inequity is harmful to a person’s mental health. Additionally, minority communities face structural barriers to care.

NAMI North Carolina Policy Director Ashish George will share his personal and professional perspectives on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. As a disabled child of immigrants, Ashish has developed an intimate acquaintance with systemic injustice and the value of solidarity. He brings that insight to his work, always striving to be aware of the forest rather than just the trees.

His journey has taken him to highs and lows of mental health, and he is very frank about the full spectrum of experiences that can come with being an outsider. Join us to learn from this bright and fascinating individual, and read his blog post by clicking here.
