Baby Devon was born 8 weeks prematurely to a mother who lived with mental illness and used substances. Carla was an upwardly mobile, successful black woman determined to be a mother, and she was thrilled when life brought a beautiful baby boy into her family. However, after six months, Devon was taken back by his birth mother to a world of abuse and poverty. Faced with the choice of letting go or fighting for Devon, Carla fought. She would risk her wealth, her sanity, even her life to get Devon back. Today she tells her story to teach others about resilience and trauma-informed care.
